The Joint Committee of the BDM/ BD2M (Sustainable Mediterranean Buildings of Monaco) convened for the ninth time on Tuesday 14 November 2023, its third meeting of the year.

In conjunction with building industry stakeholders, the Committee’s role is to assess the sustainability of construction and renovation projects. In addition to being a useful exercise in collective intelligence, these meetings are also a chance to share best practices and real-world experiences. They also highlight the State’s commitment to driving positive change towards a more sustainable construction industry that takes into account both environmental aims and quality of life for residents.

 Four Monegasque projects were presented at the meeting, each featuring a host of practical examples to illustrate their sustainable ambitions:

A major private-sector project to refurbish the Schuylkill building was awarded “silver” status for its design phase, in recognition of its ambitious goals. These include:

- keeping the original structure, to limit the building’s carbon footprint;

- optimising thermal comfort in summer/winter by insulating walls, replacing windows, installing solar shades, etc. The larger floor-through or double-aspect apartments should allow residents to remain comfortable in heatwave conditions, without having to use the AC;

- reducing energy use (by 58% from current levels) by insulating walls, removing the bio-fuel oil boiler and connecting the building to the local marine thermal energy network;

- installing a system to recycle grey water for sanitary facilities and watering plants.

 The construction industry has a vital part to play, with the energy and environmental transition in buildings now not just necessary but urgent, and the Principality’s real estate accounting for a third of the country’s total greenhouse gas emissions...

The State is leading the way, by ensuring that 100% of all its construction and renovation projects are now signed up to the initiative with a target of achieving “Silver” status.
