BDM officially becomes BD2M

BD2M-2

A year after introducing the Bâtiments Durables Méditerranéens (BDM, Sustainable Mediterranean Buildings) initiative in the Principality, Marie-Pierre Gramaglia, Minister of Public Works, the Environment and Urban Development, officially presented the new Bâtiments Durables Méditerranéens de Monaco (BD2M) initiative to the construction industry. She was accompanied by Annabelle Jaeger-Seydoux, Director of the Mission for Energy Transition, and teams from both the Mission and Envirobat BDM.

BDM officially becomes BD2M

The event was held at Monaco’s Vocational and Catering School on Thursday 26 September, and brought together 200 representatives of the Principality’s construction and urban development sectors.

The aim was to present to attendees the new Bâtiments Durables Méditerranéens de Monaco (BD2M) standard, which signals the end of a year of joint work that featured several working days and workshops for all professionals operating in the building industry and relevant government departments.

This unique tool, which has now been adapted to the context and specific features applicable in Monaco, makes it possible to engage the various parts of Monaco’s construction and urban development sector in one of the Prince’s Government’s top priorities: the environmental and energy performance of buildings. In other words, how to combine energy efficiency, comfort and aesthetics when buildings are constructed or renovated.

“This cross-cutting work based on collective intelligence has resulted in the pooling of expertise and ambitions in the field of sustainable construction in Monaco. It would have been impossible to create BD2M without all of the stakeholders who were involved. The ball is now rolling, and this initiative aims to support a trajectory that we can only influence by working together,” said Marie-Pierre Gramaglia.

The aim of the BDM initiative is to promote best practices in building (reducing the impact of materials and water/energy consumption, bioclimatic design, etc.) to ensure a healthy and comfortable space, while also taking account of environmental, social and economic challenges.

Impetus and specific actions

There were several highlights during the morning of presentations, which showcased specific actions that are being taken as a result of this “bespoke” initiative:

  • Two introductory speeches given by Marie-Pierre Gramaglia and Annabelle Jaeger-Seydoux
  • Presentation of the BD2M initiative, featuring illustrations of projects which have already been implemented:
    • Urban vegetable garden at Princess Grace Hospital
    • Villa Carmelha and Villa Picapeira
    • FGWRS: recovery of grey water at Villa Troglodyte
    • Use of low-carbon concrete (e.g. Testimonio II)
    • Network of two ocean thermal energy loops in Condamine and Larvotto: presentation, benefits, schedule
    • Presentation of vertical towers in Milan by Boeri

The event was an undisputed success. It is worth noting that given the State’s duty to set an example, the BD2M initiative will now be applied to all public building projects, including both renovations and new constructions.
