For the second year in a row, the Department of the Environment is supporting the Azur Project, a team of adventurous women who have decided to join forces to organise litter collections. Travelling by kayak, on foot or by bike, along the way the team members meet stakeholders working to protect the environment.

This year, the Department of the Environment welcomed Solène Chevreuil, an eco-adventurer who is kayaking across the Mediterranean, to the Principality. On each stage of her journey, Solène is organising litter collections and climate change awareness workshops.

She arrived off the coast of the Principality on the morning of Wednesday 30 June, and was joined at sea by Nicolas Bonnet from the Department of the Environment. In the kayak which he normally uses to take samples to check the quality of water for swimming, Nicolas escorted Solène to the Port of Fontvieille, where she was welcomed by other staff from the Department of the Environment and the Department of Maritime Affairs.

On 1 July, Solène organised a collaborative educational workshop, La Fresque du Climat (The Climate Panorama), at the Oceanographic Museum in Monaco for children enrolled at the Prince Albert II Leisure Centre. This creative session got the children to use their collective intelligence and promoted a better understanding of the causes and consequences of climate disruption.

Solène Chevreuil left the Principality on 2 July, headed for Menton on the final leg of her kayak journey. Before departing, she was keen to thank the teams from the Department of the Environment and the Oceanographic Museum once again for their welcome and support:

“Monaco has been an important port of call on my kayak adventure... I’ve been struck by the nature of the partnership with the Department of the Environment, they didn’t just offer financial support, the team is really motivated and came out paddling with me!

I hope that this partnership with the Principality will continue next year if the Azur Project launches a third Mediterranean expedition. I definitely plan to come back to the Oceanographic Museum, there’s so much to see... my visit has helped me to understand the extent of Monaco’s historical commitment to the Mediterranean and the environment. I would like to thank the Oceanographic Museum and all the teams there for hosting the awareness session for Monaco’s children.”
