Ms Céline Caron-Dagioni, Minister of Public Works, the Environment and Urban Development, took part in the Alpine States’ Ministerial Conference on Transport and the Environment, held under the Alpine Convention in virtual format on 14 January 2022.

The Alpine Convention is an international treaty covering the protection and sustainable development of the Alps. It entered into force in 1995 and has been ratified by the eight Alpine nations – Austria, France, Germany, Italy, Liechtenstein, Monaco, Slovenia and Switzerland – as well as the European Union.

Under the Swiss Presidency of the Convention, the member states and the European Commission came together to discuss issues relating to the decarbonisation of freight and passenger transport and to tourism traffic in the Alps. The aim is to step up dialogue between Alpine countries and strengthen cooperation between them on the policy for a modal shift in transport, mobility services and sustainable tourism, taking into account the Climate Action Plan 2.0 for the Alps.

In her speech, Ms Céline Caron-Dagioni presented some of the actions being taken in the Principality to control traffic and to promote soft mobility, clean-energy vehicles, intermodality and the use of public transport, then explained: “in light of the transport projects currently underway and our experience, acting on passenger transport and urban mobility is of particular interest to us as part of a joint strategy on decarbonisation and climate action.”

The conference defined itself as a first step. In the coming weeks, the Swiss Presidency will put together a draft plan for joint action, including specific targets and projects for implementation. This plan is set to be adopted at the 17th Alpine Conference, taking place from 7 to 9 September 2022 in Brig-Glis, Switzerland. The measures will seek to make a significant contribution to reducing air pollution and greenhouse gas emissions.
