The Department of Urban Amenities recently made improvements to facilities at the Port of Monaco as part of the “Clean Ports” programme.

The enclosures, which have up to now been located on the central T quay, were sometimes turned into “mini rubbish dumps” where sailors disposed of bulky waste. Additionally, during major events (Grand Prix, Monaco Yacht Show, etc.) when the most waste was generated, the Société Monégasque d’Assainissement did not have access to these enclosures.

A permanently accessible site with underground and semi-submerged containers has therefore been set up.

During installation, every possible precaution was taken to ensure that there was no pollution of the aquatic environment: an anti-pollution boom was put in place, and water samples were taken and analysed systematically.

This new “Clean Port” space has been equipped to facilitate waste sorting (containers are available for packaging waste and for glass) as well as to handle the waste generated by yachting activity: waste oil and oil filters. Hatches have also been included for those who produce large amounts of waste.

The underground containers are fully waterproof. A drain also recovers into an oil separator the runoff water from around the waste oil collection points used by vessels. This way, potentially dirty water will no longer pollute the aquatic environment.
